Today I woke up to find that my cell provider, AT&T, has a service outage in my area. My Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 had no cell service, and I was unable make or receive calls or texts. Thankfully I have a VoIP number I can use as well, but not everyone does. Unfortunately, several of my other friends also use AT&T and are in limbo as they don't have a phone that doesn't use AT&T or any alternative means of communication. While AT&T has yet to say the cause of today's outage, I am keeping my eyes and ears open for more information on the outage.
This isn't their first outage this year. AT&T had an outage on February 22nd that was more widespread but had similar symptoms as this one. In the case of that outage, they stated it was caused by a poorly timed server update.
EDIT (30 minutes after publish): AT&T has acknowledged that a cell tower issue was plaguing several high-population areas and that it has now been resolved.
EDIT 2 (1 hour after publish): My cell service has been restored and is working just fine now. I can call and text once again.
EDIT 3 (2 hours after publish): AT&T has stated that the cell tower issue was caused by a power outage at one of their data centers. I have doubts about this, since it only affected a small amount of people.
EDIT 4 (May 18): AT&T has responded saying that the outage affected AT&T Wireless, AT&T Internet, DirecTV, and other AT&T services.
